Almost every HVAC opinion a building owner receives comes from someone who profits from the recommendation. An independent assessment is valuable precisely because it does not.

The conflict owners have noticed

A contractor asked whether equipment should be replaced has an obvious interest in the answer. Owners facing a large capital decision increasingly want an opinion from someone with no equipment to sell, and are willing to pay for it.

What owners are actually experiencing

High energy bills with no explanation, comfort complaints that never resolve, repeated service calls on the same equipment, and conflicting replacement quotes with a wide price spread. Each is a specific problem you can diagnose.

Independence must be protected

Taking manufacturer commissions, contractor referral fees or any undisclosed compensation destroys the entire proposition. If you accept any such arrangement it must be disclosed in writing before engagement, and the cleaner answer is to accept none.

Action step

Write your independence statement listing every source of compensation you accept, and put it in your engagement letter.
