Building Information Modeling for installers: read and navigate 3D building models, use mixed-reality tools and enterprise headsets to overlay digital building plans, MEP models and spatial data directly onto the physical job site, and verify installs against the model.
Who this course is for
Construction installers, MEP tradespeople, layout technicians and foremen whose jobs now use 3D models, and anyone who wants to work with BIM and mixed-reality layout on site.
What you’ll be able to do
- Explain what BIM is and how models are shared on a project
- Navigate a 3D model and find the information you need to install
- Read MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) models and coordination views
- Set up and align mixed-reality overlays to site control
- Verify installed work against the model and report deviations
Course curriculum
Module 1: What BIM is and how projects use it
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a shared 3D model of the building with data attached to every element.
Module 2: Navigating models and finding install data
Installers need dimensions, elevations and product data, not the whole model.
Module 3: MEP models and coordination
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems compete for the same space.
Module 4: Mixed-reality tools and enterprise headsets
Mixed-reality tools place the digital model in your view of the real site.
Module 5: Overlaying plans, MEP models and spatial data on site
Learn the workflow for aligning a model to site control, overlaying digital building plans, MEP models and spatial data on the physical job site, laying out hangers, sleeves and openings, and checking that the overlay is still aligned as you move.
Module 6: VR and mixed reality: preview, simulate, assemble and verify
How techs use VR headsets, spatial computing headsets and mixed-reality smart glasses to preview, simulate, assemble and verify installations and repairs.
How it works
Self-paced online course. Lifetime access. Work through the modules in order, apply the checklists on real jobs, and finish with a Certificate of Completion.
