Rooftop solar installation fundamentals — racking, module installation, wiring basics, and roof integrity on asphalt and metal roofs.
Who this course is for
Roofers adding solar, solar laborers moving to lead installer, and electricians who want the roof-side workflow.
What you’ll be able to do
- Assess a roof for solar readiness (structure, condition, shading, layout)
- Install flashed mounts and racking without compromising the roof
- Mount and wire modules safely to the inverter handoff point
- Understand code checkpoints: setbacks, rapid shutdown, grounding/bonding
- Coordinate inspection and the roofer/electrician scope boundary
Course curriculum
Module 1: Solar site and roof assessment
A solar job starts as a roofing job.
Module 2: Racking systems and roof attachments
The attachment point is where solar meets roofing, and it’s where lawsuits live.
Module 3: Module installation and handling
Modules are fragile, expensive, and awkward at height.
Module 4: DC wiring basics and rapid shutdown
Roof-side electrical, scoped for installers: string wiring and polarity, connector crimping standards (the #1 fire cause when done wrong), wire management that survives 25 years of UV and wind, grounding and bonding paths through the racking, and module-level rapid shutdown device installation.
Module 5: Roof penetrations, junction boxes, and weatherproofing
Covers conduit penetration flashing, junction/combiner box mounting, attic runs vs.
Module 6: Commissioning support, inspection, and handover
Walk through the inspection day: what AHJ inspectors check on the roof (setbacks, labeling, attachment, wire management), common correction notices and how to avoid them, and supporting the electrician at system commissioning.
How it works
