Residential and light-commercial HVAC operations — system fundamentals, maintenance tune-ups, and first-line diagnostics.
Who this course is for
New HVAC techs, maintenance techs at property companies, and installers adding service skills.
What you’ll be able to do
- Explain the refrigeration cycle and airflow fundamentals in plain terms
- Perform complete heating and cooling maintenance tune-ups
- Take and interpret core readings: temps, pressures (concept-level), amps, static
- Diagnose the most common no-cool and no-heat calls
- Communicate findings and options to customers professionally
Course curriculum
Module 1: How HVAC actually works: refrigeration cycle and airflow
The foundation lesson.
Module 2: Cooling maintenance tune-up, step by step
A complete professional AC tune-up sequence: filter and blower inspection, evaporator and condenser coil cleaning (chemicals, rinse direction, fin care), condensate drain service, electrical inspection (contactor pitting, capacitor testing against spec), temperature split measurement, and amp draws vs.
Module 3: Heating maintenance: gas furnaces and heat pumps
Furnace side: filter/blower service, flame sensor cleaning, inducer and pressure-switch checks, heat exchanger inspection awareness (and when to escalate — this is a safety call), and sequence-of-operation observation.
Module 4: Electrical basics for HVAC techs
The skill that separates parts-changers from techs.
Module 5: Diagnosing the top service calls
The calls that fill every summer and winter board: no-cool (start with airflow, then electrical, then refrigerant-circuit symptoms), frozen coil decision tree, no-heat by ignition type, short-cycling causes, water leaks, and thermostat issues.
Module 6: Readings, reports, and customer communication
Covers superheat/subcool at concept level (what they indicate, when to flag for a senior tech or EPA-certified work), static pressure measurement as the airflow report card, and building a clean service report: readings, findings, photos, recommendations.
